Can Inositol Help Improve Anxiety?

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

What Causes Anxiety?

For those who struggle with anxiety, even the simplest of daily tasks can become impossible to complete. Although some people are able to push through mild cases of anxiety, for others the fight or flight response is too strong for one to control on their own. New research is pointing to the fact that metabolic imbalances may be a cause of worsening mental health problems (Palmer, 2022). Based on this new information, many people are reaching for other interventions and resources to help alleviate their symptoms of anxiety. By fixing the underlying cause of anxiety, we can cure the anxiety at its origin, instead of just using medication to mask the symptoms. One great way of doing that is by using inositol.

How Can Inositol Help?

Inositol has been beneficial in improving insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes type 2, gestational diabetes, as well as PCOS (Cherry, 2023). It is commonly found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes. It was originally included as one of the B vitamins, but now we know that it functions more like a sugar (Meixner, 2023). Wait, a sugar can help improve insulin sensitivity? Actually, yes. It seems counter intuitive, but you can think of inositol as a “healthy sugar”. This in turn can help to improve any metabolic dysregulation in the body. And as we know from new research, when metabolism is improved, so are mental health symptoms. Inositol has a strong affinity for improving specific mental health issues such as anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, and insomnia. If you or someone you know struggles with debilitating anxiety, talk to a health care professional to find out if adding inositol to your diet can help to alleviate symptoms.
